Why Democrats don't want to lower gas prices: Senator lets cat out of the bag on Bloomberg TV show. 10:22 pm Eastern July 22, 2008

advertisement

WASHINGTON – A Democratic senator on the Energy and Natural Resources Committee inadvertently explained why her colleagues have no intention of ending the moratorium on offshore oil drilling or increasing the areas open for exploration and production – no matter how popular the idea might be with gas prices soaring.

In an interview with Bloomberg TV's "Money and Politics" last night, Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., explained Democrats don't want to increase supplies of oil and gasoline because they want to wean Americans off of petroleum products.

Asked point-blank if Democrats in the Senate would consider how increasing the supply of oil would lower the prices that are pinching U.S. consumers, Cantwell replied: "Oh, we definitely want to move beyond petroleum. And so there will be a supply side offered by the Democrats and it will include everything from battery technology to making sure that we have good home domestic supply, and looking, as I said about moving faster on those kind of things like wind and solar that can help us with our high cost of natural gas."

In other words, no.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

For all you anti-drillers, lets apply your logic to cancer research. Following your logic, we should let those poor folks with the disease die a horrible, painful death to encourage us to hurry up and develop a cure? It would seem more humane to ease their pain and suffering in the interim as we do now. Why not apply this to oil exploration and drilling. Lets ease the pain with more drilling until we can come up with a sure cure.

    Dave,

The cancer idea doesn't really fly in this respect. The more appropriate analogy, since we are "addicted to oil", would be:

"I am addicted to cocaine. Therefore, to fight my cocain addiction, I will establish a cocaine plantation and processing plant in my basement."

    Dave,

You don't realize it, but you're suggesting that we provide more cancer for cancer victims.

There's a possibility that all of the offered explanations are not the main cause; as it appears that ther'es friction festering between the Citizens and the Government. If it comes to a time of conflict the Government is already prepared by restricting and limiting contrary moves by the opposition.., by supply and price.

We are set up for occupation....

      Zanke

Was that a warning from our monitors? Resistance is futile. Anything that takes another ten or fifteen years will find me too old to be driving most likely--if I am still alive by then.

There was a comment back along the way that if we were still on the gold standard, gas would be costing the same as in 1970. Leading one to think that the actual problem is not with the oil companies, but with the money, which is the province of the federal reserve system.

If space guy is still around, what about zero point energy and magnetic lenses?

Zero Point Energy is interesting but no real research is going into it so can't make much of an intelligent statement beyond the fact that the Quantum Mechanics reveal some possibilities.

        Magnetic lenses, nope.

        Fusion yes.

        Solar yes.

        Wind yes.

My lord this is astounding. Why are we fighting about this when non of our opinions matter one lick?

        A couple of things here:

        1) Taking the bus will not save the planet.

        2) Driving 45 MPH on the freeway will not save fuel unless you get run down by a rig doing 70 MPH...You won't be around to need it anymore.

        3) The price of oil is driving up the price of every thing you consume so you better adjust your monthly budget, quit charging garbage on your credit cards, quit buying things you DON'T NEED to live and get used to spending 5$ + a gallon on fuel and 12$ for a 1LB bag of apples.

        4) Right now you are taking everything you have and everything you are - for granted.

If you knew me you would know how little I do take for granted. There is no bus service where I live. I only use plastic to buy things on the net that are directly related to my little business, and pay in full when the bill comes in. Nearest town is 15 miles away on a two lane highway and if you don't keep it to about 65, you will get blown off by that truck doing 80 or so. I have kept my driving to a minimum since gas hit about 2.00 a gal.

My answer is no, I refuse to get used to something that can be fixed and can be fixed in such a way as to transform the world in a positive manner.

Sorry asti- this was just a general statement (not pointed at any person in particular)...

I do have a couple of questions for Space Guy though - if you refuse to adjust your way of living until the problem can be dealt with are you expecting to receive help from the rest of the population when your style of living is flushed down the drain?

Do you expect the solution to the problem at hand can be fixed in a time period that is conducive to your style of living?

Because it won't. This isn't something that can be solved in less then a few years - the underlying problem is greed and corruption down to the lowest levels of government. The poison of greed has wound itself into every thing that our political establishment touches and calling the landscape-contractor isn't going to save our rear-ends this time.

This whole empire is not just winding down, the load bearing struts have corroded and it's about to cave in. You are ignorant beyond belief if you cannot see the collapse in the near future. There is just no way to support the way we are continuing at this time - the best thing to do is to brace yourself for the future. Purchase things you only need, adjust your budget for the rising prices (they are only apt to get higher, inflation is just too great to stop it now), quit borrowing money against your credit cards and against your equity and stop expecting things to be corrected...they will not be in the manner you are demanding.

Perfect example of our government holding us hostage. They know what needs to be done, but they won't do it. Why, so we can be weened off of oil? When there is no infrastructure set up for any other energy source? When the technology is still being developed?

So we have to look years into the future for the technology to catch up to congress. Brilliant. In the mean time, gas prices go up, heating oil prices go up, fertilizer prices go up, food prices go up, air travel goes up, and so on.

Our Democrats at work. Good job!

Do not necessarily attribute to malice, that which can be more easily explained by incompetence.

In Washington state we don't have the refineries that would bring down our gas prices, we don't allow Oil Tankers in the Puget Sound (an area of ocean off Seattle) because of the potential for tremendous environmental damage (which the area has seen). Ms. Cantwell does her best to protect the livability of the area. She daily deals with the issue of nuclear waste from the Hanford reactor and works hard to keep big business in check for the benefit of those that vote for her each term. She's doing the job she was elected to do.

To assume something from a comment or article without knowing her track record is disingenuous.

From what is said in the linked article only makes me appreciate her more. A realist. Too bad she's not my Senator, I'm stuck with another one who according to opencongress takes way too many lobbyist funds.

Good call by the democrats in the long run. The sooner we get off oil the sooner we can stop giving massive amounts of our wealth away to people who support terrorism.

Hey, I did too! I just drove from Atlanta GA to Montana, and before I left, I checked the pressure of my tires. Boy, it sure made those 8 fillups at 70+ dollars each feel a whole lot less painful! Oh thank you, Anointed One!
